Overcoming Fear with Faith

Overcoming fear with faith. Let’s talk about something that touches every single one of us — fear. More importantly, how to choose faith over fear or how to overcome fear with faith. Our anchor verse is:

2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20timothy%201%3A7-&version=KJV

Naming the Fear

You know, fear has a sneaky way of showing up in our lives. Sometimes it’s loud and obvious — like the fear of a diagnosis, a financial crisis, or a broken relationship. Other times, it’s quiet — like the fear of not being enough, the fear of failing, or even the fear of what others might think.

I remember a season in my own life when fear felt like a constant companion. At that time, I was stepping into something new — something I felt God had called me to — but every “what if” in the book was running through my mind. What if I’m not good enough, or what if I mess this up or what if I heard God wrong?

Fear will always try to write the story for us. But here’s the truth: fear is not from God. That’s not me saying it — that’s Scripture. 2 Timothy 1:7 that tells us exactly what God has given us: power, love, and a sound mind.

Let’s break this down further.

  • Power — This isn’t about our own strength. It’s about the Holy Spirit living in us. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the Spirit that empowers us to face what scares us.
  • Love — Fear makes us self-focused. Love turns our eyes outward. When we’re rooted in God’s love, we can step forward even when we don’t have all the answers.
  • Sound Mind — Fear clouds our thinking. God gives us clarity, wisdom, and peace that doesn’t make sense to the world. Now, hold onto your coffee cup. Think about these words as you read them:

Fear says, “You can’t.”

God says, “I am with you.”

Fear says, “You’re alone.”

God says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Fear says, “You’re not enough.”

God says, “My grace is sufficient for you.”

A Porch Story: Overcoming Faith with Fear in Action

Let me tell you about my friend Sarah. She felt God nudging her to start a women’s Bible study in her neighborhood. But she was terrified. She thought, “What if no one comes or I can’t answer their questions or I fail miserably?”

One day, she read 2 Timothy 1:7 and realized — fear was keeping her from obedience. So, she prayed, “Lord, I’m scared, but I trust You more than my fear.”

She sent out the invites for her women’s Bible study. The first night, only three women came. But those three women kept coming back. And over time, that little group grew into a community of women who pray for each other, serve together, and encourage one another in faith.

Sarah’s story reminds me — faith doesn’t mean we don’t feel fear. It means we choose to move forward with God, even when fear is whispering in our ear. https://christwovenstories.com/

Practical Ways to Overcome Fear with Faith

So, how do we actually live out faith over fear in our everyday lives? Here are a few practical steps that have helped me — and I think they will help you too:

Speak God’s Word Out Loud

When fear starts to rise, open your Bible and declare His promises. There’s power in speaking truth over your situation. For example, say: “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”

Pray Honestly

God isn’t surprised by your fears. Tell Him exactly what’s on your heart. Sometimes my prayer is as simple as, “Lord, I’m scared. Please help me trust You more than my feelings.”

Here is another example of another prayer you can pray and adapt to your situation or needs. https://whatspiritual.com/prayers-against-fear/

Take One Small Step

You don’t have to leap the whole mountain in one day. Just take the next faithful step. Fear loses its grip when we move forward in obedience, even in small ways.

Surround Yourself with Faith-Filled People

We need a community of people who will remind us of God’s truth when we forget. Community is a shield against the lies of fear.

Remember God’s Faithfulness

Keep a journal of answered prayers and past victories. When fear tries to tell you God won’t show up, you can look back and say, “He’s done it before, and He’ll do it again.”

Encouragement of the Heart

I don’t know what fear you’re facing today. Maybe it’s a decision you’ve been putting off or it’s a conversation you’ve been avoiding. It could be a dream God has placed in your heart that feels too big for you.

Here’s what I want you to hear: Fear is a liar, but God is faithful.

You are not walking into that situation alone. The same God who parted the Red Sea, who shut the mouths of lions, who calmed the storm with a word — that God is with you right now.

Choosing faith over fear doesn’t mean you’ll never feel afraid. It means you’ve decided that fear will not be the driver of your life — God will. Then you know you are overcoming fear with faith.https://christwovenstories.com/

So today, take a deep breath. Picture yourself sitting in your favorite peaceful surrounding. My favorite spot is my porch. Imagine the sun is warming your face, and a breeze is carrying the scent of fall and fresh coffee. Remember that you are braver than you feel, because the Spirit of God lives in you. https://christwovenstories.com/about-the-author/
